Church and politics
Date: 30/04/2010
We attended a packed Polam Hall theatre last night to participate in the church led contest of the four parliamentary candidates in attendance.
A mixed audience of political activists, party supporters and interested public listened to the candidates answering questions submitted by the audience at the start of the debate.
It soon became clear we were listening to one parliamentarian , two local councillors and a lady reading of crib sheets.
One local councillor suggested he would need to keep his Darlington business if he were elected as he employed twelve people,we think he really meant he would divide his time between Westminster and his shop.
The second local councillor seemed to be under the impression she would conduct her Parliamentary business from Darlington , we think she has not thought through the demands of being a MP , where it all takes place and the life changes she will have to make.
The lady with the crib sheets who appeared to lose her way in the debates was probably just not up to the challenge.
Finally the potential parliamentarian demonstrated his intellect , knowledge and beliefs clearly and most of all had looked at the job of an MP and gave commitment to Darlington without strings.
That is the single most important aspect of a parliamentary election in Darlington
